How to Grow Your Email Newsletter as a Creative

An email list can be one of the best marketing tools available to artists, the problem is, many stress over how to grow and best utilize this list. With only a few steps I️ will show you exactly how to grow your newsletter following to ultimately grow your business.


When clients ask how to grow their newsletter, this is the answer I️ always give first. It is the easiest way to grow your list and is so simple it's obvious...and yet not enough artists do it. To start to grow your list, simply to share about it. Let people know it exists. Your favorite followers, prime customers, and favorite fans will be excited to sign up.

Why are artists hesitant to use this technique? They worry that it feels too salesy or pushy. In reality, not everyone is seeing everything you post on social media so you have to share again and again to get seen even once. Plus, people that love your work will want to join a list that provides them benefits like inside looks, early shopping, discount codes, and whatever other offerings your newsletters might include.

A few ways to share include:

  • Announcing on Instagram stories or posts

  • DMing customers directly

  • Sharing on your website or blog

  • Having a sign up sheet at events

This is a slower way to grow your list, but it works and is great to use in tandem with the other options!


This is the easiest way to grow your list. Why? Because it happens automatically.

Connect your email provider to your store. Have it automatically sign up anyone who provides their email or makes a purchase.

You can also have it automatically send out abandoned cart emails, thank you emails, flows, and more to people already on your list. This is a great way to use automation to stay engaged with your current clients and encourage them to purchase more work.

*This is also a great way to gather analytics. You can see who purchased more than once or send automated emails to repeat customers to thank them. Set this up as soon as possible and watch your list expand!


This is probably the best way to grow your list, but it also takes a little more work. Brainstorm ways that you could encourage people to sign up. Maybe you send a discount code to new subscribers or you host a giveaway and clients must provide an email to enter. Brainstorm lots of ideas and try to use as many as you can over time.

When thinking about how to grow your newsletter subscriber list, consider why someone would want to join your list over just following you on Instagram. What are you offering them over email that they won't receive anywhere else? Is is a discount code, a blog post, a behind the scenes look, the ability to shop early, etc. People are asked to join lists all day long but why do they join the ones that they do? They either purchased from that company or want to or are actively interested in something that company if offering. Now, what can you offer to entice people to want to join your list?

Remember your list is always growing and you don’t want to get lazy with your marketing efforts. It is important to use these tactics every so often to consistently grow your list over time.
