The Importance of a Client Contract Agreement for Artists Taking Commissions

As an artist, it's important to have clear communication with your clients to avoid misunderstandings and ensure that both parties are on the same page when it comes to a commission. One way to achieve this is by having a client contract agreement in place. In this post, I️ will share the importance of a client contract agreement for any artist taking commissions and how it can benefit both you and your clients.

What is a client contract agreement?

A client contract agreement is a legally binding document that outlines the terms and conditions of of a commission between an artist and their client. It protects you if they decide to back out and it makes sure the client knows exactly what they can expect from you, the artist.

It includes details such as pricing, payment terms, timeline, edits, delivery details, and any other relevant project details. By having a document that both the artist and client read and sign, both sides are agreeing that they are ready to move forward with the commission and understand how the process will work.

Why do we need one?

We need a client contract agreement for a few reasons. One, it makes the artist look professional. Two, it gives the client confidence in what they are buying prior to payment. Finally, it gives an outline to both parties of when certain things need to take place: deposits, edits, delivery, final payment. It ensures that there are no miscommunications, misunderstandings, or issues when it comes time to close the commission “deal.”

How should we use it?

I️ generally like to send this agreement when describing the terms of the commission. If I️ am meeting a client in-person I️ will print it out and we will go through it together, otherwise I️ enclose it in an email. I️ recommend requiring a signature on this document as well as a payment of the initial deposit prior to starting a commission. (I️ often use phrasing like: "to secure your place on my commission list or before I️ can begin working on your commission I️ require a payment of the initial deposit and a signed client contract agreement.")

How do we create one?

Lucky for you, I️ have a template that shows exactly how to create a client contract agreement. It also comes with a bonus “informational page” for the client to fill out their exact visual expectations for the commission. Many clients don’t know exactly how to articulate what they want a commission to look like and this extra document walks them through how to accurately describe what they want out of the piece.
